Steady growth rate for used mobile phones – but there are still obstacles

The market for used phones is growing steadily, with an estimated annual increase of 10.23 percent between 2022 and 2027. Although many are willing to buy used, the results look completely different when it comes to selling. Only 18 percent of those surveyed in a survey conducted by Kantar on behalf of Swappie, state that they have ever sold their old smartphone, while 40 percent choose to keep it as a reserve. Of those who kept it as a reserve, a small majority (46 percent) stated that they never needed to use it. These are some of the results of a new study on online consumer behavior conducted by Kantar on behalf of Swappie. In addition to the contradictions between selling and buying, it also shows that a majority of Swedes, as many as 77 percent, can consider buying a smartphone online. – It is gratifying to see that there is continued steady growth for used mobile phones. The study also shows two main drivers for the steadily growing demand for used mobile phones – responsibility and convenience. The responsibility part can be traced to concern for the environment and the desire to promote the circular economy. But when it comes to convenience, it’s more about purely financial savings – it’s become easier and more affordable to buy used electronics online. – By acting sustainably with the environment in mind, you as a consumer contribute to the circular economy. The pattern that emerges in the report is in good agreement with previously presented data from the electronics industry, which shows that less than 15 percent of old mobile phones are recycled. It is estimated that there are over 700 million smartphones in European homes, and electronic waste, also known as e-waste, is the fastest growing waste stream in the world. About the survey The survey was conducted from March to April 2022 by Kantar, the world’s leading company in data, insights and consulting services. The sample consisted of approximately 1,000 individuals from Sweden’s population aged 18-64. The study was conducted on behalf of Swappie.
